Step 1: Get Your Nail Specialist License
To legally perform nail services in Florida, you’ll need to meet these requirements:
✅ You must:
- Be at least 16 years old or hold a high school diploma/GED
- Complete 180 hours at a Florida-licensed nail or cosmetology school
- Take a 2-hour HIV/AIDS course from a Board-approved provider
- Submit your application and pay the license fee to the Florida DBPR (Department of Business and Professional Regulation)

Step 2: Know What Nail Services You’re Legally Allowed to Offer
Once you’re licensed, you must follow Florida’s nail specialist scope of practice. This defines what you can—and cannot—perform legally as a Nail Tech.
✅ You CAN perform:
- Manicures and pedicures
- Nail shaping and cuticle care
- Acrylic, gel, and dip powder enhancements
- Nail art and airbrushing
- Callus removal and exfoliation
- Electric file use (e-file)
- Polish, gel, and nail strengtheners
- Sanitation, disinfection, and safety protocols
❌ You CANNOT perform:
- Skin cutting with blades (e.g., Credo blades)
- Medical foot care (e.g., diabetic foot services)
- Invasive treatments or any service that punctures the skin
- Services outside of nail care unless you hold an additional license (e.g., facial, massage)

- Late Renewal: $45.00
✅ Renewal Requirements:
- 16 hours of continuing education from a DBPR-approved provider
- Topics include sanitation, law updates, ethics, and chemical safety
- Renew before expiration to avoid penalties or license cancellation
🚨 Don’t Let Your License Expire!
If your license becomes null and void, you’ll need to reapply as a new applicant—and you may not legally work until reinstated. Set a reminder in your calendar and stay current with CE requirements.
Step 4: Open or Work in a Licensed Nail Salon
Whether you dream of owning a boutique nail bar or working in a luxury spa, Florida law requires all services be performed in a licensed salon or spa.

- Display all practitioner and salon licenses
- Have a licensed professional present during business hours
