How to become a Massage Therapist in Florida: Eligibility & Requirements
In Florida, becoming a licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) requires completing an approved education program and applying through the Florida Department of Health, Board of Massage Therapy. Florida’s licensing process is well-defined, ensuring therapists are well-trained and meet high professional standards before entering the field.
Below are the current Florida licensure requirements for Massage Therapists:
- Be at least 18 years of age or have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Have a valid driver’s license or other form of identity.
- Take an approved HIV/AIDS Course.
- Pass the MBLEx (Massage & Bodywork Licensing Exam) administered by the FSMTB (Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards)
- Submit a completed application and pay applicable fees via the Florida Board of Massage Therapy website.
Undergo a Level 2 background screening (including fingerprinting).
IMAGE students who do not pass the MBLEx exam on their first attempt may return for up to 10 hours of remedial tutoring or refresher courses at no additional cost.

Do I need to buy my own massage table?
Not at IMAGE! Students who enroll in our Massage Therapy program receive a FREE professional massage table as part of their enrollment. This allows you to practice your techniques at home throughout the program and gives you the equipment you need to begin your career after graduation.
Do I need a high school diploma or GED to become a massage therapist?
Yes. In Florida, you must be at least 18 years old or have a high school diploma or GED to qualify for licensure.
Can I work while attending massage school?
