While the role is often referred to casually as a “nail tech,” Florida recognizes this career legally as a “nail specialist.” It’s a real, regulated profession — and a growing one, too.

How Do You Become a Licensed Nail Specialist?

To legally work as a Nail Specialist in Florida, the state requires you to complete specific training and submit an application to the DBPR. Here’s what that looks like:

Step 1: Complete Your Education

You must attend a licensed school and complete:

• 180 hours of Nail Specialist training
• A 4-hour HIV/AIDS course approved by the Florida Board of Cosmetology

Step 2: Submit Your Application

After graduation, you’ll send the following to the DBPR:

• Completed COSMO-1 form
• Proof of training and HIV/AIDS course
• Application fee (typically $75–95)

Florida does not require a written or practical exam for Nail Specialist registration. Once your paperwork is processed, you’ll receive your license and can begin working legally.

Are You Already Doing Nails Without a License?

If you’re accepting payment (even tips), posting nail work on social media, or promoting services from your home or an unlicensed space, you’re likely committing unlicensed activity under Florida law. Even if you’re talented and have loyal clients, you’re still subject to DBPR enforcement.

What’s Legal to Do Without a License?

• Practice nails while enrolled in a licensed training program (under instructor supervision)

Anything beyond that — even charging for press-on application or shaping someone’s nails for a “tip” — puts you in violation of Florida’s licensing laws.

How Long Is the License Good For?

Once you’re licensed, your Nail Specialist registration is valid for two years, expiring on October 31 of odd-numbered years (e.g., 2025, 2027). To renew, you’ll need to complete 10 hours of continuing education and submit your renewal application with payment.

If you miss the renewal deadline, your license can become “null and void,” meaning you’d have to reapply and possibly retrain — so it’s important to stay on top of renewal deadlines.
