Critical Scam Alert for Florida Beauty Licensees

Scam Alert for Florida Beauty Licensees: Important Warning from DBPR

The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) has issued a critical warning to all license holders about a phishing scam targeting beauty professionals and licensed businesses across the state. As a licensed Florida beauty school, the Institute for Medical Aesthetics and Laser (IMAGE) is committed to keeping our students, graduates, and partners informed.

Whether you’re enrolled in our Facial Specialist Program, Nail Specialist, Full Specialist, Massage Therapy or Electrolysis & Laser Hair Removal Program, or our Medical Aesthetics Certifications, it’s important to protect your license, identity, and business.

Scam Alert for Florida Beauty Licensees: Important Warning from DBPR

🚨 What’s Happening?

DBPR has identified fraudulent emails being sent to licensed professionals, including estheticians, electrologists, massage therapists, and nail techs, asking for:

  • The front and back of your driver’s license
  • Your EIN (Employer Identification Number)
  • A link to your business website

These emails do not come from DBPR and are part of a scam aimed at stealing personal and business information. Anyone applying for a license in Florida, or who holds an existing license, could be a target.

🔐 Who’s at Risk?

If you’re pursuing licensure through one of our career training programs—such as:

…you must stay alert and know how to recognize a scam targeting new or renewing licensees.

🛑 What NOT to Do

If you receive an email like this:

  • Do not click any links

  • Do not upload your ID or business info

  • Do not provide your Social Security number, EIN, or medical documents

Florida Statute §817.5685 defines “personal identification information” as:

  • Social Security Number

  • Driver license or ID number

  • Passport or Alien Registration number

  • Business Tax ID (EIN)

  • Medicaid/Food Assistance accounts

  • Credit card or bank account numbers

  • Medical records or licensure documents

As a student in IMAGE’s Esthetics or Nail Programs, Massage Therapy, or any other clinical-based curriculum, you may be submitting documentation to DBPR during or after graduation — so it’s vital you verify the source before responding.

📞 Watch Out for Fake Phone Calls Too

DBPR has also received reports of fraudulent calls impersonating agents:

  • DBPR agents will only call you if you request a callback

  • They will never demand payments or personal info over the phone

  • All licensing fees should be paid securely through your DBPR online account

If you’re working toward your Florida Massage License, Nail Specialist License, or Esthetics License, don’t let scammers exploit the process.

✅ Protect Yourself During the Licensing Process

Here are steps we recommend to all IMAGE students and graduates:

  • Only trust emails from @myfloridalicense.com

  • Be skeptical of messages that feel urgent or demanding

  • Verify DBPR contact via 850-487-1395

  • Ask your IMAGE instructor or director if you’re unsure about a request

Report any suspicious messages to the Florida Attorney General’s Office
