Do You Have to Live in Florida to Get an Esthetician License? A Florida Licensing Guide for Out-of-State Students

Thinking about coming to Florida for esthetics, nails, massage therapy, electrology, laser, or medical aesthetics training—but you live in another state?

You may be wondering:

  • Can I attend school in Florida if I don’t live there?
  • Do I need a Florida driver’s license?
  • Can I get a Florida professional license with an out-of-state address?
  • Do You Have to Live in Florida to Get an Esthetician License?

The good news is yes, you can attend school in Florida without being a Florida resident. You also do not need to obtain a Florida driver’s license simply to attend school and apply for an applicable Florida professional license or registration.

At the Institute for Medical Aesthetics & Laser (IMAGE) in North Fort Myers, Florida, we welcome students who travel to Southwest Florida for their education.

There are a few important things to understand before you enroll—especially if you plan to return to another state to work after graduation.

Let’s break it down.

Do You Have to Be a Florida Resident to Attend Esthetician School in Florida?

No. You do not have to be a Florida resident to attend an approved Florida school.

Students can maintain their permanent residence in another state while attending school in Florida.

This means an out-of-state student can attend IMAGE in North Fort Myers and complete the required Florida education for an applicable professional license or registration without establishing Florida residency simply for school.

Depending on the program, IMAGE combines approved online or homestudy education with required hands-on training at our Southwest Florida campus.

Do You Need a Florida Driver’s License to Get a Florida Facial Specialist License?

No. A Florida driver’s license is not required simply because you are applying for a Florida Facial Specialist registration.

An out-of-state driver’s license does not, by itself, prevent an otherwise qualified applicant from applying for a Florida professional credential.

Applicants still need to provide the identification and documentation required by the appropriate Florida licensing agency.

Does Florida Have an Esthetician License?

Here’s something that can be confusing when you’re researching esthetician schools in Florida.

People commonly search for a “Florida esthetician license,” but Florida officially uses the title Facial Specialist for this registration.

Florida Facial Specialists are regulated through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).

So if you’re looking for an esthetician school in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, or Southwest Florida, you’ll often see Florida schools referring to their Facial Specialist program.

Do I Need a Social Security Number for a Florida Facial Specialist Registration?

Yes. DBPR requires a Social Security number when applying for an individual professional license or registration.

This applies to Florida DBPR registrations including:

  • Facial Specialist
  • Nail Specialist
  • Full Specialist

Massage Therapy and Electrology are regulated through the Florida Department of Health rather than DBPR and have their own application and licensing requirements.

Florida Facial Specialist, Nail Specialist & Full Specialist Requirements

IMAGE offers Florida-approved specialty programs for students interested in careers in esthetics, nails, and beauty.

Florida specialty training requirements include:

After completing the appropriate approved program and satisfying Florida’s other application requirements, eligible graduates may apply for their Florida registration.

You do not have to become a Florida resident or obtain a Florida driver’s license simply to apply for these Florida registrations.

Can an Out-of-State Student Become a Florida Massage Therapist?

Yes. Living in another state does not, by itself, prevent an eligible applicant from obtaining a Florida massage therapist license.

Massage Therapy is regulated by the Florida Department of Health and Florida Board of Massage Therapy, rather than DBPR.

IMAGE’s 500-hour Massage Therapy program in North Fort Myers is designed to prepare students for the Florida massage therapist licensing process, including the applicable licensing examination.

Massage applicants must also satisfy the Board’s current examination, background screening, and other licensing requirements.

You do not need to establish Florida residency or obtain a Florida driver’s license simply because you want to become licensed as a massage therapist in Florida.

Can an Out-of-State Student Get a Florida Electrologist License?

Yes. Florida residency is not required simply to apply for a Florida electrologist license.

Electrology is regulated through the Florida Department of Health, with the Florida Electrolysis Council overseeing requirements for the profession.

IMAGE’s 320-hour Electrolysis & Laser program provides the required education and hands-on training for eligible students pursuing Florida licensure and prepares students for the applicable examination process.

Students do not need to change their permanent residence to Florida or obtain a Florida driver’s license simply to pursue a Florida electrologist license.

Florida has additional requirements governing laser and light-based hair removal. Graduates must meet all applicable Florida requirements before practicing these services.

Can I Use My Florida License in Another State?

A Florida professional license or registration does not automatically authorize you to work in another state.

This is extremely important for anyone considering traveling to Florida for school.

Professional licensing is regulated at the state level, and requirements can vary significantly from one state to another.

Another state could require:

  • More education or training hours
  • Different coursework
  • Another examination
  • Additional professional experience
  • A different scope of practice
  • Verification of your Florida license
  • Review of your school transcript and completed hours
  • A different type of professional license altogether

Some states may offer endorsement or reciprocity pathways for certain professions. Others may have very different requirements.

Never assume that a Florida professional license automatically “transfers” to another state.

What If I Want to Attend IMAGE and Then Return to My Home State?

That’s absolutely something you should consider before enrolling.

If your plan is to come to Florida for school and then return home to work, contact the official licensing board or regulatory agency in the state where you intend to practice before you enroll.

Ask whether the education program you’re considering and the resulting Florida credential will satisfy that state’s current requirements.

IMAGE is a Florida school. Our programs are designed around applicable Florida education and licensing requirements.

We are not experts in the licensing laws of all 50 states, so IMAGE cannot interpret another state’s licensing requirements, determine whether another state will accept your Florida education or credential, or guarantee that you will qualify for licensure there.

The licensing agency in the state where you plan to work is the best source for that information.
